Breakfast

Ever woken up hungry on and cursed yourself for not buying food for breakfast? I think for most students the answer to that is yes.
The solution is simple, head to Ikea! The one euro breakfast deal can get you bread, butter, jam, cheese, egg, croissant and tea or coffee for only 100 of you finest euro cents.
Not bad at all. Service is from Monday till Saturday and the offer lasts until 10.30am. So the only problem now is waking up to get there before the offer ends...

ORKZ

If I told you that there was a community in Groningen who run a none profit organisation which serves cheap food and drink, organises free concerts, houses exhibitions and shows movies in it's own cinema for almost half the price of a normal cinema ticket, would you be impressed? ORKZ is deffinately something to be impressed about. Whether you are impressed by the price of the drinks, the quality of the food, the range of films shown, the intimacy of the music venue or simply the dedication and frienliness of the people who work there, one visit is all you need to fall in love with the place.
Located at Emmastraat 15 in the south of the city the building is full of history. It was previously a hospital but became empty and was left to waste before a group of around one hundered people took over the building by night and claimed squatters rights in 1979. The building has been home to the ORKZ community ever since. Many of those who work and socialise at ORKZ also live there but visitors are made to feel more than welcome. Overall the atmosphere is well, 'gezellig' to put it the Dutch way. For those who aren't too well aquainted with the Dutch language, the word 'gezellig' has no direct English translation but is generally means something like enjoyale, pleasant, sociable, friendly, comfortable, cosy, and snug all rolled into one word. For me there is no better word to discribe ORKZ community.

If you want to find out more information about what's happening at ORKZ you can check out their website at www.orkz.net

Mama mia! It's Mama Mini!

Want to make your room in Groningen feel more homely? In need of cheap second hand furniture? Look no further than Mama Mini! Groningen's biggest second hand store owns four outlets located throughout the city and sells pretty much everything, from sofas to beer glasses to tables to clothing to records to art work to...TV remote controls (well, you never know when you might need a spare one!). You can buy a decent peice of furniture for as little as fifteen euros and get it delivered to your door by Mama Mini staff. Or you can borrow a special bike that allows you to cycle your purchase to your house yourself.
Not only is Mama Mini a bargain but it also gives money to good causes, having already donated over sixty thousand euros to charities and small organisations in 2010 alone. Pretty cool!
If you want to find out more about the organisation or look for the branch closest to you then check out the Mama Mini website at www.mamamini.nl
